Choice at last: a genuine alternative to HICAPS

Historically, NAB HICAPS has been seen as the only option for ancillary health professionals wanting to provide clients with immediate health fund claiming. Now a technology led competitor is offering a solution that challenges HICAPS’ dominance.

Instant health fund claiming. When it launched the concept was a revelation. HICAPS’ payment processing solution was great for patients and great for practices. They were the best provider, because they were the only provider.

Unopposed for years, the National Australia Bank’s dominance in the allied health space is now being challenged. Having fended off the efforts of rival banks like CBA and Suncorp who offer their own attempts at equivalent solutions, HICAPS now faces competition from a new entrant – and they’re not linked to a traditional bank.

Genuine alternatives

Tyro is new to the allied health world but is a pioneer in primary health. Following the launch of Medicare Easyclaim Tyro listened to the industry and developed an integrated solution. The banks were too slow to compete with Tyro’s integrated approach (they’re still catching up) and within a year Tyro became the market leader. They now process 1.2 million claims every month, more than half of all Easyclaim transactions.

“I mean it, it's a great system, it works and it never lets you down,” said Elizabeth Jones, a practice manager at Newcastle Adult and Paediatric Heart Centre. “We’ve been with Tyro for a long time and there is no other system we would consider using. Tyro works all the time, and support always gets back to you straight away. It works perfectly and we couldn’t be happier. We’ve never looked back." 

The allied health space is a different challenge for Tyro, given the market’s dominance by HICAPS.

But now practitioners have the power of choice. This is great news in itself and it also means existing providers are being prompted into improving their offering.

Helping allied practices untangle and integrate

Like with their Easyclaim solution, integration and speed are key for Tyro. Terminals and workstations can be set-up to a range of configurations and without messy cabling for integration – only a power supply and Ethernet cable to the practice network are required.

They’re already collaborating with Smartsoft, to streamline the fund claiming process for Allied practitioners. Ultimately it means time saved on double data entry and the avoidance of rekeying errors.

Online and future-proofed

An online solution means concerns over NBN readiness no longer apply. The disruption caused when sharing phone lines with a practice’s fax machine is also a thing of the past. Finally, internet powered transaction times are a huge win for busy front desk staff, with a 3 second average turnaround time for card payments. 

Choice at last

Choice is always good. With a genuine and viable alternative to HICAPS now on the market, practices can now choose the solution that best fits staff and patient needs. Where banks have made some efforts to match HICAPS, independent providers such as Tyro are looking at things afresh, developing an innovative solution based foremost on the needs of practices and patients.
