How to create cloud database?

We are currently running Front Desk 16.5.2 and would like to know if it is possible to run the database on cloud?

The first question you need to ask yourself is “Does my system need to be in the cloud?” as this may introduce performance issues, additional cost and risk.

If you are operating from one location, generally the best place for your system is for it to remain in your office. This is even the case if you wanted to connect back into your system, say from home, on a casual basis.  We will be covering options for connecting to your system from home in a future article.

On the other hand, if you are operating your business from multiple locations and you wish to do so from a single Front Desk database, placing your system in the cloud may be the best option.

Your common options are:

  • Smartsoft Database Hosting

  • Virtual Desktop in the Cloud

Smartsoft Database Hosting

  • All services provided directly by Smartsoft

  • Hosted on Smartsoft Servers in a Tier 3 Datacentre (other users include SA Government)

  • All communication over a secure, encrypted connection

  • You run Front Desk locally, which connects to you data in the Cloud

  • All data management, including backups by Smartsoft.

  • You need a good quality internet connection


Virtual Desktop in the Cloud Option

  • This is a specialised service supplied by a third party vendor that we can recommend

  • All hosting in Australia and from Tier 3 Datacentres

  • No local installation of software required

  • You have a managed desktop in the Cloud running your business software

  • Your access is from almost any device Macs, iPads, PC, Android tablets etc.

  • Requires a steady internet connection, but can be less than optimal

Be cautious of software vendors and hosting companies hosting overseas to minimise their costs due to possible performance, privacy, service (are they really backup up your data?... can you directly contact the company with your data? often this is not the software vendor) and data sovereignty issues.

Hi Tony,

How long has Smartsoft offered the database hosting? We currently use Hostus for our Front Desk hosting but if we were able to use Smartsoft I assume this would make it easier for us to do our updates etc.

We have offered a hosting solution for several years now. The hosting that we offer is database only hosting, which requires you to run a local copy of Front Desk on all your machines. We do not offer a cloud desktop in terminal server/Citrix, such as the service provided by Hostus, as this is a specialised service.

Each type of cloud hosting has its own benefits. Yes, you can can perform your own updates if you use our hosting, however I believe the cost for someone like Hostus to run an update is minimal and provides some convenience and time saving. Though we would be happy for you to use our services, I would first consider if it is worth moving to another solution solely for self-install upgrades.
