Idea not to "clear" search characters when searching for a patient

When searching for a patient, or using the Ctrl-P function, the default search field is "surname". Sometimes we need to change this to "mobile" or any of a number of different fields for a search we are making. Then, when it comes to making a new search some time later, we forget to alter the search field back to "surname".   So we type in a person's name and of course "mobile" or whatever doesn't pick them up.   We then have to re-select "surname" and - here's the crux - retype in the patient's name. Is it possible not to need to "clear" the "search character" box when selecting for a different "search on" field?
Cheers, J.
