Image support in SMS calendar links

Today, we’ve introduced support for images when sending SMS Add-to-Calendar on support devices, including the latest iOS and Samsung Galaxy devices.

An image now appears with your logo (if setup) in SMS appointment reminders sent using the Add-To-Calendar links. If your logo has not been setup, a default image appears (see below).

We believe that this is a great way for your appointment reminder to stand out and to increase the chances of the patient adding the appointment into their personal calendar. Best of all, the image does not form part of the SMS character count and so it does not incur any additional charges.

If you would like to add a custom image to your account, please submit your logo here: http://smartsoft.com.au/smslogo/

Further, from Front Desk version 18.1.4 (to be released tomorrow) we have shortened the text included in SMS sent with Add-To-Calendar links by 7 characters to help users try and squeeze into one SMS credit.

Tim,

Does the sms character length shortening only happen if we include our logo in the sms or across the board.

We include the appointment time, locate and some text which when merged just meets the character length at the moment.  By shortening it by 7 characters means we go to two sms's every text every day across two location diaries.

Shortening the sms characters means our daily sms reminders will now go over 2 sms's therefore costing us more to send.

Otherwise love the idea/concept.

Hi Sharon

There is no additional characters added by adding an image. By shortening the text by 7 characters, you are using less overall characters (smile), which if anything will reduce your SMS credit count, not increase it.

Note that you do need the version of Front Desk being released today (18.1.4) to reduce the character count when adding a calendar link to your SMS. This occurs whether or not you decide to use a custom image.

we already use the max of the characters when sending the sms.  By reducing by 7 characters means our sms's will not too long therefore sending two sms's for each message instead of one.

Hi Sharon

We haven't reduced the length of SMS messages by 7 characters - a single SMS reminder sent from Front Desk can still contain up to 160 characters before it will require an additional SMS credit.

What we have done is reduce the length of the text that gets automatically included when you tick the "Add a calendar link to SMS reminders" option.

This text used to say "Click to add to your calendar", and it will now say "Tap to add to calendar". By shortening this text, it means there will be more characters available for your own message before it reaches the 160 character limit.
